Tulsa is a city on the Arkansas River, in the state of Oklahoma. Known for its zigzag and streamlined features, it has one of the nation’s largest concentrations of Art Deco architecture with over 140 parks, plus a variety of cultural attractions and entertainment venues. Whether you’re looking for world-class art, ballet, opera or just a day at the zoo, Tulsa is a great choice for a quick getaway. On the culture front, you could spend an entire weekend touring the city’s fine museums. Theater-going opportunities and the music scene thrives with everything from country and western to indie rock at local nightlife concerts to huge music festivals. For the outdoor enthusiasts the city hosts 20 miles of paved recreation trails that run along the Arkansas River and weave past picnic areas, playgrounds, fountains, and sculptures.

We caught up with Daniel Brunson from Hicks Brunson Eyewear to tell us about their wonderful optical store and to learn more about Tulsa from his local perspective.

The history of your store:
Hicks G. Brunson came to Tulsa as a representative of American Optical Co. in 1929, and opened his own dispensary in the downtown Medical Arts building in 1950. In 1952 he opened his second location at Utica Square. In the 1960’s Hicks Brunson Eyewear was a pioneer in being one of the first in the region to offer eyewear by designer names such as Christian Dior. For more than sixty years and four generations, Hicks Brunson Eyewear continues to raise the standard of the eyewear market in North Eastern Oklahoma. It is our mission to give our clients confidence through the craft of opticianry.

Interesting fact about your store:
Our business spans four generations and was established in 1950, making it the oldest optical store in Tulsa.

Why did you choose to carry Leisure Society in your store:
Leisure Society offers a unique level of craftsmanship and sophistication in beautiful gold plating that we did not have in any of our other collections.

What makes the neighborhood special:
Our store is located in historic Utica Square, which was built in 1952 and was Tulsa’s first suburban shopping center. All year long locals visit our shopping center to enjoy free concerts in the Summer, outdoor art exhibits in the Fall, and fashion shows. Various types of clocks are located throughout the center, which serve for some as reminders of the past.

The best hotel / resort in your town:
The Mayo Hotel, which opened in 1925, is a beautiful example of the stylish art-deco architecture that was popular at that time. It is also within walking distance of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

Favorite Place to Escape to:
Turkey Mountain urban wilderness area. I love running the trails here on the weekends.

Favorite Eatery:
Stonehorse Cafe – Located in beautiful Utica Square, serving a variety of French & American inspired cuisines, afternoon tea, cocktails, wine & more.

Favorite Bar:
Fassler Hall – Located in the heart of downtown Tulsa, Fassler Hall is known for its German beer, food, and live entertainment. The duck fat fries served with Gouda cheese are out of this world!
